Insurance questions, answered plainly
Motor, health, fire, burglary and claims. Cannot find your question? Call or message us any day.
Motor
Is third-party motor insurance enough?
It meets the legal requirement and pays for damage you cause to other people or their property. It does not pay for damage to your own vehicle, or for theft. Comprehensive cover adds those, which is why most people with a newer vehicle choose it.
Which documents do I need to renew my motor policy?
Usually the vehicle registration certificate (RC), your previous policy, and an ID proof. If the policy has already expired, the insurer may inspect the vehicle before renewing, and we guide you through it and help you arrange it at your location.
What is IDV?
Insured Declared Value (IDV) is the most the insurer will pay if your vehicle is stolen or damaged beyond repair. It reduces as the vehicle ages. Setting it too low reduces your claim, and setting it too high raises your premium, so we help you choose a fair figure.
What is a no-claim bonus (NCB)?
It is a discount on the own-damage part of your premium for every claim-free year. It belongs to you, not the vehicle, so it can move with you when you change your vehicle or insurer. It is usually lost if the policy is allowed to lapse for too long, so renew on time.
Can I renew a motor policy after it has expired?
Usually yes, but you have no cover during the gap, the insurer may ask for a vehicle inspection, and your no-claim bonus may be lost. Call us as soon as you notice the date has passed.
Health
What does cashless health treatment mean?
At a network hospital, the insurer pays the hospital bill directly, up to your policy limits, and you pay only for items not covered. Away from network hospitals, you pay first and claim a reimbursement.
What are waiting periods?
Most health policies do not cover certain conditions for an initial period. Common examples are a short waiting period for new illnesses, and a longer one for pre-existing conditions and specific treatments. The exact periods differ from plan to plan, and we show you these before you buy.
Family floater or individual policy?
A floater covers the whole family under one sum insured that any member can use, and is usually cheaper for young families. Individual policies give each person their own sum insured, which suits parents or people with health conditions. We help you pick based on ages and needs.
Can I switch my health policy to a better insurer?
Yes. Health policies can be ported to another insurer at renewal, and waiting periods you have already served are generally carried across for the existing sum insured. Apply well before your renewal date, and we can help compare the options.
Do I have to disclose my medical history?
Yes, always. Hiding a condition, even by mistake, is one of the most common reasons a claim is rejected later. It is better to declare everything and choose a plan that fits.
Is there a tax benefit on health insurance?
Premiums paid may qualify for a deduction under Section 80D of the Income Tax Act, depending on the tax regime you choose. Please confirm your own position with a tax advisor.
Fire and burglary
What does a fire insurance policy cover?
It covers loss or damage to your building, machinery, furniture and stock from fire, lightning, explosion and other listed perils. Add-ons can extend it to flood, storm, earthquake, riot and strike damage.
What is under-insurance, and why does it matter?
If your sum insured is lower than the real value of what you are covering, the insurer can pay only a proportion of the loss. Review your sum insured every year, and after renovation or when stock grows.
What does a burglary claim need?
Usually proof of forced entry, a police report, and records of the stock or items lost. Keep purchase bills and stock registers up to date, and follow the security conditions in your policy.
Will the insurer inspect my property?
Sometimes, depending on the insurer and the value insured. We tell you beforehand what they will check, such as the building, stock and security, and we guide you through the inspection.
Claims
What should I do after a motor accident?
Make sure everyone is safe, then call us. Take clear photos of the vehicles and the spot, note down the other party's details, and do not send the vehicle for repair before the insurer or surveyor has been informed. In case of theft, injury or major damage, a police report may also be needed. We guide you at each step.
What should I do if I am admitted to hospital?
For a planned admission, tell us and the insurer before you are admitted, so cashless approval can be arranged. In an emergency, inform the insurer as soon as possible, usually within 24 hours. Keep all bills, reports and discharge papers.
Why did my claim get reduced or rejected?
The usual reasons are an under-stated sum insured, undisclosed medical history, late intimation of the claim, or a policy condition such as a room-rent limit or co-pay. We check these with you before you buy so they do not surprise you later, and we help you respond if the insurer raises a query.
How long does a claim take?
It depends on the type of claim and how quickly complete documents reach the insurer. Sending the right documents the first time is the best way to avoid delay, and we follow up with the insurer until it is settled.
